Definitely Different.

From the blurb, I had no idea what this book was going to be about, but it was definitely going to be different and that it sure was. At first I kind of rolled my eyes at the story line as I read, however I quickly found myself drawn in. It was an odd concept, one that R.C. Boldt made work.

"Just want to be loved. In spite of my darkness."

Georgia is different, something only she knows and keeps close to her vest. Her ability isn't what I thought it was going to be at all. It was almost a "convenience" in a way, but for others not her. She's been through the ringer in her younger years and that made her the woman she is today, strong with walls built so high nobody can scale them. Except maybe Bronson...

"You're waitin' for a goddamn knight in shinin' armor. Thing is, a knight in shinin' armor is effing useless. Know why? It's because they've never seen battle. That's why their armor is clean and shiny."

A little corny, however tells the story of Bronson beautifully. While he is the so called leader of the town and gang, he really isn't as bad as he thinks. Tough on the outside, while a big ball of mush on the inside is what he is and I really liked his character for that. He was drawn to her because she wasn't afraid of him, or dying as morbid as that sounds. He is dangerous and no matter how much he wants her to stay away, he can't let her go.

"...it's easier to forget that this arm belongs to someone who kills people. That is belongs to a criminal. It's easy to forget because I realize now that this man is more than his deeds."

Bronson and Georgia have a lot going on around them, a bit of a whodunit if you will and that's what made me finish this book in a day. R.C. Boldt did a great job of adding players to the game until you don't know which way to go, keeping the angst high, which I like. These are two broken souls that found each other, now they have to try and stay alive long enough to enjoy it.

The book is well written and a smidge gory. While I was apprehensive at first, again R.C. Boldt did a great job with Georgia and all she entails. It was subtle, which worked beautifully. Along with our main characters, we have family, friends and co-workers to help round the story out. Beyond My Darkness was a different read for me and I'm glad I gave it a chance.
