BLURB.

He clicked “yes” on a dare. She bought a failing candy shop. Now they’re neighbors for the summer—and neither is ready for what comes next.

Renley Gossage has one shot to prove she’s more than Cape Meril’s favorite cautionary tale: restore her favorite candy shop before the town writes her off like they did her father. No help, no shortcuts, and definitely no rich men wielding engagement rings and making things messy.

Theo Williams never planned on ending up in Cape Meril. A drunken game of truth or dare turned into a botched online engagement, and now he’s across the ocean, escaping his father’s control with nothing but designer shoes, misplaced confidence, and a rental next door to Renley.

She’s practical, stubborn, and covered in paint. He’s posh, persistent, and willing to use a sander if it means earning her trust.

Between collapsing drywall, gossiping neighbors, and the chaotic schemes of Renley's aunt, their forced proximity turns into something dangerously close to real.

MY REVIEW.

4.5 Stars from Tiffany!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

S L O W burn, but worth it!

In true Meghan Quinn style, we get two “opposites attract” main characters, plus a best friend, a quirky relative, and a small-town setting to bring it all together. In Rules for the Summer, we meet Renley and Theo in an awkward situation caused by a misunderstanding of the word financier. That alone gives you a pretty good idea of what you’re in for with the rest of their story.

Even though the blurb lays out the basics, the real fun is always in the details with this author. I liked Renley’s headstrong, do-it-yourself personality. She’s a handywoman, taking on odd jobs around town to save money for her dream of re-opening the town's candy store. Theo, on the other hand, starts off as her opposite, rich and a bit spoiled, but not exactly lazy. Once he sees what Renley can do, he’s all in on learning and helping her… whether she wants him to or not.

We all kind of know how this will end, but getting there means plenty of hurdles and hijinks. Along the way, we meet the best friend Rupert and Renley’s eccentric aunt, Kitty—who might be one of the most over-the-top characters Quinn has written in a while. Aunt Kitty is truly in a class of her own. Maybe a bit much at times, but still entertaining.

As the summer went on, Renley and Theo grew closer, and I kept wondering when the other shoe would drop. The story makes us wait until just about the very end and then everything wraps up pretty quickly.

The book is well written in classic Meghan Quinn style. Two words really stood out to me: piddle (which reminded me of my grandma) and fluffernutter (it’s wild how many people don’t know what that is—I love it!). If I had one small complaint, it would be the constant rewriting of the “rules.” Even though they were a big part of the book, and I’ll admit I started skimming them after a while. That said, I really enjoyed watching these characters grow and mature throughout the story. I wouldn’t mind getting a little peek at where they are a few years down the road.
