Lots Going On With This One…

This is the fifth installment in the Titan Security series and the only one I’ve read so far. The focus here is on Gemma and Nate: she’s the poor little rich girl, and he’s the man hired to protect her. From what I’ve gathered, the series has a recurring theme, falling for your charge while chaos brews in the background and this book is no exception.

We first met Gemma and Nate in Capri. She’s nineteen, freshly graduated, and ready to dive into a gap year of carefree fun. What she doesn’t realize is that Nate has been hired as her bodyguard—specifically to keep that fun in check. Although she comes from money, Gemma has never felt like she truly belonged in that world. As she spends more time with her stoic, handsome protector, things begin to shift.

At twenty-three, Nate saw a lot. Coming from humble beginnings, he joined the military and became a sniper quickly to send as much money home to his family as he could. He’s spent his life guarding people like Gemma, never living like them. While he craves something “normal,” he knows he’s not going to find it on this job.

The book begins six years ago, then moves into a plateau before catching up to the present. While informative, this middle section dragged a bit for me, I found myself skimming in parts, hoping the romance or action would ramp back up. Instead, more characters were introduced, making it harder to stay grounded in the central storyline.

That said, I liked both Gemma and Nate right away. Her naivety was a little frustrating at times, but it’s understandable given how sheltered her upbringing was. Nate was solid, dependable and straightforward. The mystery running in the background kept the pages turning, and I was invested in seeing how everything would unfold.

The book is well written, though I think a bit of editing could help tighten the storylines. Despite being the fifth book in a series packed with supporting characters, it worked well as a standalone, though I imagine it’s even more compelling when read in order. The next book’s leads were prominently introduced here, and I’ll have to admit, they piqued my interest.
