Cute, Sexy Romance.
In Ruthless Love, we meet Marissa and Cain, a couple who believed they had fallen out of love, only to discover they might still have feelings for each other. Once high school sweethearts, they now find themselves in very different places twelve years later.
Marissa is now a small business owner, waiting for her soon to be ex-husband to sign the divorce papers. Cain, a small-town cop, is dragging his feet as this divorce was a surprise to him. Sure, things were ho-hum in the marriage, but he didn’t think it was that bad.
I liked Cain more than Marissa for sure. He was a go with the flow type of guy, while she felt harpy, constantly wanting to change him. To make him a book boyfriend. It felt too forced on her end.
“It’s possible that while I was changing, he was too, and together we didn’t keep up.”
That in a nutshell is what the book is about. While the writing is solid, the constant focus on change began to feel repetitive. The narrative kept emphasizing how they had to change and how much they appreciated those changes, which, by the end, felt a bit overstated. I admit I found myself skimming toward the end, hoping for something unexpected. That said, Ruthless Love can be enjoyed as a standalone novel and serves as an introduction to the Azure Ridge series.
