Solid Romance Added to the Series
In With Every Breath, J.H. Croix gives readers a solid, well-written romance featuring Alice and Jonah. While they are both starting over if you will, there was something about these two that felt special.
Jonah is back in the small town of Willow Brook to stay with his grandmother who is ill. Needing a change in his life after a horrific tragedy, Jonah changed direction and is now a hot shot firefighter joining the Willow Brook team. He can’t run from his past, but is taking it one day at a time. I liked Jonah. He was pretty straight forward and while he’s dealing with some heavy stuff, he wasn’t too insufferable to be around. Alice was written perfectly for him.
Alice is also back in Willow Brook to take over the retiring veterinarian's practice. She grew up in the small town, left for school, briefly came back when her parents died and has now returned to live in her childhood home. Alice also has some baggage, not Jonah level, but baggage nonetheless. She was also a solid leading character. Confident, yet unsure about what her future will hold.
While we are on a romance journey with this cute couple, there are some heavy duty emotions Jonah needs to work through. J.H. Croix ripped his life right from recent headlines and handled it beautifully. Not too much and not too little in my opinion. Same with the slight albatross around Alice’s neck trying to hinder the budding romance. There was no dwelling, kind of a cut and dry situation, which worked.
The book is well written, sexy and sad all at once. Along with our main characters, previous Willow Brook couples are present and accounted for, including Jonah's grandma. Another storyline J.H. Croix handled with kid gloves. With Every Breath is an excellent addition to the series and can be read as a standalone, however it’s always better to read the entire series.
