Book Blurb

A forced sentence leads to a reckless passion…….

Hadley

When my husband walked out on me over a year ago, it devastated me. When the divorce papers came, it killed me. When we had to sell our house, it broke me.

But then he moved in with his new flavor of the month and told our daughter his new woman wasn’t into children. That pissed me off.

Now Riley feels abandoned, and I can’t make it better; no matter how hard I try. I’m desperate to help her adjust to the loss of a male figure in her life. The companion program that matches adults up with children who have loneliness and abandonment issues is my last hope.

The counselors tell me he’s doing community service hours, and I ask to sit in on his meetings with Riley. The minute I see him astride the matte black Harley, I know neither my nor Riley’s life will ever be the same again.

Trick

Community Service. Two words I should be thankful for, but I’m not. I resent the hours it’s away from building my business. The two previous kids I'd been paired up with didn’t work out because their mothers were more interested in getting in my bed. This next match with a little girl is my last hope. Unless this kid works out, I’m destined to serve time.

When they push her into the room wearing pink converse with a black dress, her crazy curls barely held back by the barrette in her hair, and studious glasses on her face, I can tell she’s scared - of new people, of change, of being pushed aside. Something inside of me breaks, and I want this girl to feel wanted again.

What I’m unprepared for is meeting her mom. The second our hands touch, there are fireworks, bright lights, and a picture of the future I could one day have. The future I’ve never allowed myself to wish for.

Community service becomes more than a chore, more than time I resent for being taken away from me. In the months that follow, I realize they’re just like me: they’ve been abandoned, left behind by the world, forgotten by those who should love them.

Thanks to the one last hope in both our lives - we found the light in the darkness we’d been searching for.

My Review

4 Stars!

I was pulled right into this story. The story has laughs, secrets, pain, and heartbreak.

This is Hadley and Trick’s story. Hadley tried everything to save her marriage but her husband continued to deliver dis appointment again and again. After he more or less tells their daughter he is done with her also she turns to a companion program for her daughter. But the issue is Trick her companion had trouble with the law so she needs to meet him first. The sparks fly. But will all the baggage they are carrying around can they ever try for anything more than friendship? Will try be able to overcome the baggage of the past to have a future?

I loved these characters and also the side characters. I felt I was able to connect with the characters and the story was a great read.

I recommend this book.

3.5 Stars!

Going into Trick, I wasn't sure what to expect. The concept of the companion program is what made me want to see what kind of tricks Laramie Briscoe was really up to. Pun totally intended. Convict mentoring a little six year old? There can't be anything easy about that.

Well, right from the start these two were all in and that's where I think I missed the boat with this book. I like the struggle and some angst. Sure Trick and Hadley had major baggage, however things always seemed to fall into place for them.

“You could destroy me, you know?”

Trick is getting his life back on track after a few mishaps with the law. Nothing serious, but serious enough for him to do some time and be on parole now. Entering the companion program has helped with his community service hours, however keeping the moms at arms length has proven to be a problem. When Trick meets little Riley, he is instantly impressed with the way she carries herself and even more impressed with her mother.

It's the perfect time for Hadley to enter Riley in the companion program. She's old enough to realize she doens't have a father figure in her life and she's not looking for a partner any time soon. Hadley is still moving on from a bad marriage and is finally starting to keep her head above the water without anybody's help. She is enjoying being an independent woman.

With a pretty predictable storyline, it isn't hard to see exactly where things are going to go with this couple. Honestly, they needed a few more roadblocks besides thier own insecurities to give the story the shot of angst it desperately needed. They both realize there is something missing in thier lives and instantly start to gravitate towards each other.

“The loneliness I didn’t even know I felt before you two showed up f-ing suffocating me when you aren’t here."

Aw Trick was good at doling out the mushy lines like this for being such a bad ass. The book was well written from dual points of view. While it was a cute story, it was redundant at times almost a little boring with everything going thier way all of the time. Laramie Briscoe threw a curve ball in there at the end, but even that was cleared up quickly. It was a good, safe, yet sexy read.
