I Wish I Could Rate it Higher
As a fan of Shay Savage, I have come to absolutely love her out of the box characters and Matthew may have pulled ahead of Edh. Let's say he's a close second, but boy this Matthew is hard not to instantly love. Now Mayra was a different story. Not that I didn't like her, I didn't really trust her, so Shay Savage had to convince me.
I was all in from the blurb and boy the rest of the book is just that good. At times it was hard to read about Matthew's struggles. All you wanted to do was feel sorry for the kid and then he turns around and does something amazing and changes your mind. He knows he's different. He's been that way all of his life. Now he gets a glimpse of a life he could have, wants to have, with Mayra.
Again, I wasn't too sure of Mayra and if she hurt my Matthew, I don't know what I would have done. She was beautiful, smart, athletic and popular and like the rest of the school, I wanted to know what her ulterior motive with him was. I wanted nothing more than a good girl for him. Shoot, the guy has definitely earned it.
Turns out Mayra is quite the catch. With a bit of a muddy past herself, she wants to get to know the real Matthew and sets out to do so. Whether he likes it or not. The struggle is real. The feelings are real and he has no idea exactly what to do with those feelings.
The book is beautifully written and tackles a serious situation with well placed humor. You aren't constantly feeling sorry for Matthew, more rooting for him to win. The kid need a win damn it. He's earned it. Along with Matthew, his uncle, aunt, as well as Mayra's dad play a big part in this book. And we can't forget the lottery ticket. That ticket lingered in the background of the story and popped up at the perfect moment. I was worried about how that whole situation was going to play out and again, it flowed nicely.
If I wasn't already a fan of the author, this book would have sealed the deal. It was everything I wanted and more.
