[Blog Tour + Review + Giveaway] Behind Closed Doors by J.L. Berg

BCD Amazon

My name is Roman Cavenaugh and I’m kind of an asshole.
Running a company isn't easy, especially when everyone expects you to fail, so being a jerk? It comes with the territory.
I don't have time to mess around, and I sure as hell didn’t see her coming.
Cara Hamilton—she was supposed to be off limits…a temporary employee brought in during my assistant’s maternity leave.
But, in the blink of an eye, she became so much more.
An obsession I couldn’t shake.

So yeah, I may be an asshole, but now, I finally had a purpose, and soon, she would be mine.
All’s fair in love and war…

4 Stars!

J.L. Berg is not a new author to me and her Ready series happens to be a top favorite of mine. So when I saw this book and checked out the blurb, it was a no brainer for me to read it. Behind Closed doors is a book that takes you on a journey of love, lust, obsession, heartbreak, exploration, redemption, and second chances.

Behind Closed Doors was a sexy, sweet, angsty, and passionate love story that kept me glued to the pages once I started reading it. I devoured this book, letting Roman and Cara consume my thoughts until their journey was over. I went through a range of emotions throughout their story but by the end, I knew it was worth it.

Meet Roman and Cara. Complicated. Passionate. Two words that describe these two and their relationship. It was never easy for them. Though the sexual energy between them was thick and intense, these two have an uphill battle to a happy ending. But a love like there's that lasts forever is worth every moment... it took to get there.

 I recommend this book.

It was Missing Something

The blurb says Behind Closed Doors can be read as a standalone, however to me, it felt like I was missing something to fully enjoy the dynamic of Roman and his younger brother Jude. While Jude is a supporting character this time around, he is mentioned quite a bit along with his wife and child. Mentioned in ways that have affected Roman now. Making him the man he is today. I'm thinking if I would have read the first two books, I could have appreciated Roman and his quirks more.

"Cute but dumb."

A phrase that would rule his life. Roman heard these words uttered by his father about him when he was a just a boy. Jude was the brother groomed to take over the family business and Roman was the eye candy, which made him a very determined young man, always wanting to prove his father wrong. Because of this, Roman wasn't good in relationships, or having any kind of personality really. He was a jerk and wore that attitude like a badge of honor.

Enter a beautiful ray of light named Cara. She is a naive twenty two year old in the big city to finally join her boyfriend and start thier new lives together. Of course she ends up working for grumpy Roman and from a mile away you can see what's going to happen. Then when it does, the story kicks into warp speed.

I'm not a huge fan of insta-love, especially where there is a long term relationship thrown in the mix. Yes people grow apart, however I needed more than one chapter for that. This was a very sticky situation that was "fixed" by a horrible betrayal of trust and everybody went on thier merry way?? I was starting to check out at this point in the book. It was all to clean and easy. I need a little grit and angst with a storyline like this.

The book was well written from dual points of view. I liked Roman as a character, but thought he needed more dimension. There's a lot going on with that guy that could have made for a better story instead of him just jumping into the thick of things with Cara thinking his life is now complete. Although written as a standalone, personally I feel it would have been beneficial to read the first two books.
